Gift from God

As a child, the females in my family were all into creating various crafts. I self taught myself how to do embroidery and cross stitch around the age of 6. It was relaxing and easy to do. My mother did crocheting and my sister knitting and sewing. Growing up in "Slower Lower Delaware," I looked forward to the Delaware State Fair and we could display our crafts and compete against others for awards and money. This for me as a child was exciting. I accumulated hundreds of ribbons which I still have. Years later I still create my embroidery and cross stitching to enter in the fair. That has not changed. I find myself absorbed in the creation. I feel satisfaction and peace as I take the fabric in my hands and begin to sew the images. I am a person that finds it difficult to sit still. From the smallest of my projects to the largest, I can be still mostly and find peace. I remember when my children were younger taking them to doctor appointments, hospital stays and music lessons, where I would sit and work on my projects.

What do I personally receive from my hobby? I get the satisfaction of completing a project, following through, and giving away many as gifts. When I am working on the projects, my hands are not idle. It is a type of spiritual journey and gift I have been given from God where I can work on a project and let my mind wonder in peace away from personal and everyday issues. To focus and feel. And, I can gain satisfaction looking at my creations and thank God for the ability to be able to create and share these gifts.

Lutheran Church Wilmington

As a Reconciling in Christ congregation of the ELCA, we believe that the gospel is God's gift to all people, shared unconditionally and without regard to race, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, socio-economic or family status, age, physical or mental abilities, outward appearance, or religious affiliation. We seek racial equality and justice. In this way, we live into the truth written in Ephesians (2:14)—that Christ breaks down the dividing walls between us and makes us one.
